Social Self

I'm significantly paraphrasing this idea from Sam Harris's Waking Up app introductory course, as I did not transcribe the audio. But one of the sessions focuses on our "Social Self." It's one thing to think of oneself separate from all external forces. It's another thing to think about our thoughts and behaviors while also actively thinking about how others are perceiving us.

One of Harris' recommendations is to allow a negative thought or emotion to arise, and instead of processing it, allow it to pass away. This is not unlike Harris' guidance during routine mediation. Be he also suggests recognizing that those around you are experiencing the same things. They are also confronting challenges, negative emotions, and being consumed with how they are being perceived.

This can help to have compassion for yourself, and also for those around you. I can see how this could further allow for negative thoughts, particularly those of inadequacy, to just pass away on not be dwelt on.

Like with any mindfulness practice, this will likely feel forced until it doesn't. But knowing what I do about my past mindfulness practices, I will surely give it a try.
